Primer on the Autonomic Nervous System, Third Edition Reviews
This is truly an excellent introduction to the autonomic nervous system. The chapters are short to medium length and filled with in-depth but readable text bordering on prose. Nearly every facet of the autonomic nervous system gets its due, though I wish the exercise chapter was more fleshed-out.
Vastly informative and comprehensive, I actually found it to be a page-turner (for medical geeks, medical zebras, or in my case, both). Excellent material for understanding the whole forest, rather than walking circles around a tree. Make that slithering, for the gravitationally challenged. This is not written for laymen/women, fair warning. You should have a fairly substantial base grasp before you tackle this...or go for it with the help of a medical dictionary if you are not familiar with the terminology. I bought the kindle edition...geeky enough that I had no need for the dictionary, but I'm weird ;)
I just received a copy of the new addition of the Primer. This is an amazing book because it covers such breadth and depth at the same time. I am not a research scientist or medical professional but have been learning as much as I can about this complicated system. Each chapter is short but concise giving references and organized in such a way that makes sense and is easily accessible for quick review. This edition is a substantial expansion from the 2002 edition. It covers nearly 1/3 again as many pages, twenty new chapters, and includes much of the new research in the field. New color illustrations as well.
Fantastic book, covers such a wide variety of topics providing sufficient background info and references to give the reader as deep an understanding as they wish. If you are at all interested in the brain and nervous system, pick up a copy of this book, I assure you, you will not want to put it down.
